November 2011
One of our latest projects - signed, sealed and delivered.
This time however, we've done something slightly different: it isn't every day we get to work on a project that's not only fun but will make a positive difference to a very special group of people.
CanTeen is a great Australian charity helping young adults between 12-25 who are living with cancer, with a mission is to support, develop and empower patients, siblings and offspring. They provide members with a place where they can simply be young people, away from the daily pressures that come from living with cancer in the hospital or at home.
We felt this was the perfect collaborative project to help a great cause: we were offered free labour from some of our subcontractors with furniture and fittings donations from some of our clients, so matched this by waiving our fees and together set about making the new CanTeen office the truly special place it deserved to be.
By maximising the available natural light and focusing on inspirational stories, the whole area could become a positive experience for members – further enhanced by the addition of gaming stations, LCD TVs, a graffiti wall and comfortable lounge chairs! All in all, a great place for members to feel at home.

Of course, our input is only a small part of the ongoing CanTeen story as it continues to source fundraising, corporate involvement and volunteers.

- What was the brief?
CanTeen had recently consolidated three offices into 1 new space on Elizabeth Street in Sydney. The brief was to turn this into an energetic yet functional workplace for the CanTeen team, with a members’ area catering for patients, friends and family allowing them to relax, socialise and be supported by CanTeen staff. The whole space needed to feel like a home away from home and very different to a normal work environment.
By incorporating soft furnishings, display banners and a bright colour palette the space was made to feel very youth-focused, while the addition of kitchen and work areas allowed the team to manage their day productively.
Valmont ensured its commitment to sustainability by integrating modern planter boxes throughout the office to provide a healthier, more pleasant working environment.
