Formerly head designer of our Brisbane office, Leigh Devine has been appointed as a Director, overseeing all things design, client and project-related.
Still based in Brisbane, Leigh will assist the senior management team with guiding the team and strategy for the Brisbane business, continuing to ensure design and delivery are matched to the Valmont way of doing things.
Give us a quick insight into your previous roles before Valmont.
My first 5 years of commercial experience were as an Interior Designer at two of Brisbane’s largest design houses – Woods Bagot and Hassell, where I worked on award-winning large scale workplaces for national clients.
That followed with two years at the Department of Public Works as a Project Manager and Interior Designer for ‘Office Interiors’ and is where I developed crucial skills in negotiation, estimation as time management design and construction resources. All of which then brought me to Valmont just over three years ago.
What is your favourite part of the design process?
I love listening to clients in the initial briefing meeting, understanding what makes them and their team tick, and conjuring up the beginnings of the ‘design seed’ which will later feed the entire design concept and solution.
Your biggest achievement to date at Valmont?
Well, there are actually two! Firstly, assisting in building the Valmont Brisbane team from 3 staff in its infancy to around 12 staff now, and cementing Valmont as a leader in the Design and Construct marketing within Brisbane.
Secondly, co-designing and delivering our largest project to date nationally for McCullough Robertson in Brisbane – over 5,000sqm and award-nominated!
What are your top 2 personality traits?
Intuitive: my ability to read a scenario/ brief, understand and interpret it to arrive at the best solution.
Strategic: able to keep an eye on the ‘big picture’, providing clients with the approach or solution for a project is the right one, and being able to bring the client and team to the same table constructively.
And outside of Valmont: any hobbies?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, I love renovating; this is something that for me is actually never-ending – it seems I do it with all of my spare time, so I think it certainly qualifies!
Tell us a little known fact about you.
The way I ‘relax’ is by doing something completely immersive, and that can be either as simple as going for my daily run, or illustrating as well as painting (watercolours).
